[DUFF ] bdag  "Self". The equivalent in meaning to the first person singular pronoun ང་ q.v. In Buddhist sutras, it also is used with the meanings "me", "myself", and also "oneself". 1) Used in conjunction with a variety of connectors to indicate different cognate meanings, e.g. see བདག་ཉིད་. 2) Most commonly seen in Buddhist texts as the word for the solidified "self" which sentient beings conceive of having but which is not there in reality. This sense has been translated as the "I" and "self" both of which fit. It has also been translated as "ego" but the meaning of ego as used these days does not match the full meaning of this term when used in this context. 3) In grammar, one of the pair བདག་གཞན་ q.v. In this case, བདག་ refers to the agent of a transitive action. 4) One of རྡོ་རྗེ་གདན་བཞི་ the four vajra seats q.v.
