[DUFF] sems pa  I. v.t. བསམས་པ་/ སེམས་པ་/ བསམ་པ་/ སོམས་/. "To mind"; to use the སེམས་ mind to consider, think about, or just to do the things that mind does. "To think about", "to give thought to". E.g., [TC] ཇི་ལྟར་བསམས་པ་ལྟར་ཁ་ནས་ཤོད། "speaking in accordance with how he thought about it"; གང་བརྩམས་ལམ་དུ་འགྲོ་བ་ཞིག་བྱུང་ན་སེམས། "giving thought to it when there is the question of which road to embark on"; བདེ་སྐྱིད་འཐོབ་པར་སེམས་པ། "to think about getting happiness / good times / better times". II. "Volition". Translation of the Sanskrit [NDS] "cetanā". 1) "Volition" is one of the ཀུན་ཏུ་འགྲོ་བ་ལྔ་ five ever-present mental events. It operates to take the mind towards its object and fix it to it. There is no specific term for this in the English language but it has been variously translated as "will", "motivation", "volition", "(mental) drive", "directionality". It is the drive in mind which results in either mental action or mentally motivated action of body or speech. Therefore it is regarded as equivalent to karma.
